Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: Supporting a diverse workforce who deliver exceptional Spanish-language products

This year, Comcasters throughout Pennsylvania celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with the help of Unidos, its employee resource group focused on Latino and Hispanic product development and support, personal and professional development and mentoring, and providing volunteer support in the local communities we work in.  Hispanic Heritage Month was an opportunity to celebrate our commitment to supporting a diverse workforce who help deliver exceptional products for our Spanish-speaking Xfinity customers.

A highlight of the month-long celebration was receiving the Mejor de lo Mejor award by Latino Connection magazine in the Entertainment & Television category at the Latino Ball on October 14 in Harrisburg. Mejor de lo Mejor awards recognize companies making strides in providing excellent customer service to Latinos.

In addition, Comcast hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month luncheon at our Harrisburg Call Center, featuring the presentation of Governor Wolf’s Hispanic Heritage Month proclamation by Luz Colon, Executive Director of Governor Wolf’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs.  Her remarks were followed by dance lessons, domino games and traditional Latino food.

“Celebration of a culture that loves music as story and art as life is important,” said Bill Colon, a member of Unidos who’s originally from San Isabel, Puerto Rico.  “Comcast’s commitment to diversity in its workforce allows us to bring our best and most complete selves to work.”

Comcast’s products also offer our Spanish-speaking customers the best TV experience available.  XFINITY X1 gives our bicultural Latino customers the ability to enjoy TV in their native language. Whether they are browsing XFINITY On Demand, checking the Common Sense Media ratings on Kids Zone or searching for their favorite actors with the X1 Voice Remote, XFINITY X1 allows them to enjoy the experience in their language of choice – Spanish or English. And the X1 Sports App makes it easy for our Latino customers to keep up with their favorite country’s fútbol team so they never miss a moment of the action.

Our XFINITY TV Latino packages offer almost 60 Spanish-speaking channels. We have thousands of shows and movies available on X1 in Spanish, along with curated recommendations, popular destinations and a variety of content for the whole family.

Comcasters devote thousands of hours each year to Latino/Hispanic organizations such as the Latino Hispanic American Community Center in Harrisburg, the Spanish American Civic Association in Lancaster, Centro Hispano Jose Hernandez in York and Centro Hispano Daniel Torres in Reading have all been sites for Comcast Cares Day projects for many years.  In addition, we support Latino / Hispanic Chambers of Commerce in areas we serve.

In addition to the many hours of volunteer work our employees contribute to local organizations during events like Comcast Cares Day, they also spend time in their communities as ambassadors for our Internet Essentials program.  Internet Essentials is designed to expand broadband adoption among low-income American households receiving HUD housing assistance or with at least one child eligible to receive free or reduced price school lunches. Once in the program, participants receive fast, affordable Internet service for $9.95/mo + tax, the option to purchase a computer for just $150, WiFi router and access to free digital literacy training.

A recent example of this commitment was the work our employees did in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg earlier this month to collect supplies for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.  Both efforts resulted in thousands of pounds of water, diapers and other supplies collected and shipped to the island.
