Comcast was recently selected by the Monongalia County Commission to build an additional 20 miles of fiber network to connect more homes and businesses across the county to fast and reliable Internet, mobile, entertainment and security services from Xfinity and Comcast Business.
This selection marks the continuation of a public-private partnership between Comcast and Monongalia County in West Virginia. In June 2024, the company and county announced a $17.8 million project to connect unserved and underserved Monongalia County residents and businesses. In total, these network expansions will connect more than 2,200 homes and businesses throughout the county to high-speed Internet – some for the very first time.
“We are putting a big emphasis on connecting more of our community to a dependable network because we recognize fast, reliable Internet is a necessity, not a luxury, in today’s society,” said Monongalia County Commissioner Sean Sikora. “Monongalia County is thrilled to partner with Comcast to bring local residents and businesses the Internet access they deserve, and we’re grateful that along the way, Comcast has been uplifting our community by supporting digital equity initiatives locally to help close the digital divide.”
“Comcast and Monongalia County are demonstrating that partnership works when it comes to connecting underserved and unserved residents and businesses to broadband,” said Ricky Frazier Jr., Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Keystone Region. “Our state-of-the-art network helps people stay connected to the moments that matter most, and our commitment to the communities we serve goes beyond building the best network. We also work to advance digital equity through Internet Essentials, our low-cost Internet service for low-income families, and Project UP, our $1 billion commitment to unlimited possibilities.”
Residents can visit the award-winning Xfinity Store located at 740 Venture Drive, Morgantown, WV, 26508 to learn more about our products and services. They can also visit Xfinity.com/MyTown and enter their addresses for more details on construction timing and service availability.
What It Means for the Monongalia County Community
Comcast’s commitment to communities goes beyond building the network and aims to increase economic mobility for the local community and its residents. That’s why Comcast created Internet Essentials, a broadband adoption program that offers eligible households low-cost, high-speed Internet and affordable computers. Since its inception in 2011, Internet Essentials has connected more than 100,000 low-income West Virginia residents to broadband service at home. Across West Virginia, Comcast serves more than 65 municipalities and has launched nine Lift Zones to provide students and families with free, high-speed WiFi and digital skills training. Lift Zones are part of Project UP, Comcast’s comprehensive $1 billion commitment to help build a future of unlimited possibilities and the continuation of the company’s long history of giving back to communities where it provides service and where its employees live and work.
